QOLT Standard 1/QM Standard 1

QOLT 1.1 states:  "Instructor uses course environment to provide clear and detailed instructions for students to begin accessing all course components, such as syllabus, course calendar, assignments, and support files" (This is the same as QM 1.1)

QOLT 1.3 states:  "Course description includes the purpose and format of the course, as well as prerequisite knowledge and competencies, if applicable" (which is similar to QM Standard 1.2--):

QOLT 1.4 Online etiquette expectations for various forms of course communication and dialog (e.g., chat, "hangout," email, online discussion) are presented and clear to the student (which is similar to QM 1.3)

Here is another example for Online Netiquette:

Please watch the following video by Kid President (a star on YouTube) about being polite to each other and making the world a better place—it will be a great start to the way we will be treating each other in our discussions throughout the quarter:

             (borrowed from http://jolt.merlot.org/vol6no1/mintu-wimsatt_0310.htm)

“Netiquette is a way of defining professionalism through network communication:

  • Do not dominate any discussion.

  • Do not use offensive language.

  • Never make fun of someone’s ability to read or write.

  • Use simple English.

  • Use correct spelling and grammar.

  • Share tips with other students.

  • Keep an “open-mind” and be willing to express even your minority opinion.

  • Be aware of the University’s Academic Honesty Policy.

  • Think before you push the “Send” button.

  • Do not hesitate to ask for feedback.

  • When in doubt, always check with your instructor for clarification.”

QOLT 1.6:  A list of technical competencies necessary for course completion is provided, identifying and delineating the role/extent the online environment plays in the total course (similar to QM 1.5)

Part of Standard 1 of QM (1.9) is to have students introduce themselves.  This is similar to QOLT 4.1 (At the beginning of the course, instructor provides an opportunity for students to introduce themselves to develop the sense ofcommunity)
